People of all ability levels can direct their own supports.
PEOPLE WANT THEIR LIVES BACK and building-in provisions for
consumer choice and control is the only effective way of assuring
that individuals have the chance to determine their own destiny.
Partnerships between service consumers, their families and local
communities are essential to supporting people with severe
disabilities in the community.
Prescriptive government regulations and personally directed
services are incompatible.
Government regulations (federal, state and local) need to be
"decoded" so that individuals with disabilities and their families
can understand them.
Consumers should be given the final say in how and where they live
and whom they live with.
We know what to do and how to do it. The challenge is to translate
"best practices" into the everyday performance of the service system
across the
country.
